About

About Contraception SA

Contraception SA is a South African information site about birth control. We explain the everyday methods in plain language, the combined pill, the progestogen-only mini pill, the weekly patch and the injection, so you can weigh your options before you speak to a doctor. Nothing here is dressed up to push a product. It is meant to be the clear, honest version you wish you had found first.

We are not a clinic and we do not diagnose or prescribe on this site. What we do is set out the facts, the trade-offs and the practical bits (how long a method takes to work, what suits different bodies, where to get it), and then point you to a proper, regulated way to start a consultation if you decide you want one.

Why this site exists

Contraception is one of the most common health decisions women make, and yet the information around it is often either clinical and cold, buried in leaflets, or clouded by old myths passed between friends. Plenty of people are not sure whether the pill will affect their weight, whether the injection is safe, how quickly the patch starts working, or where to even begin. That gap is the reason we started writing.

Our aim is straightforward. If you land here trying to choose or switch a method, you should leave understanding what the main options actually do, which factors change what is safe for you, and how to get contraception in South Africa without fuss. We cover the pill, the patch and the injection in detail because those are the methods you can start through an online consultation. We are equally clear about the longer-acting options, the IUD and the implant, which work brilliantly for many women but need to be fitted in person at a clinic.

This is a private topic, and we treat it that way. There is no judgement here about your age, your relationship, your reasons or your body. In South Africa, minors can access contraception confidentially, and public clinics provide it free of charge, so cost and privacy should never be the thing that stops someone getting sorted.

How we relate to Online Doctor SA

Contraception SA is an information property of Online Doctor SA, a South African telehealth service. Think of this site as the educational side: a focused resource that explains one topic properly and connects you to the actual medical service behind it.

We want to be upfront that this is a commercial relationship. When you start a consultation through one of our links, that consultation and any prescription are handled entirely by Online Doctor SA, with HPCSA-registered doctors and SAPC-registered pharmacy partners. The online consultation covers the pill, the patch and the injection. For an IUD or implant, you will need to see a clinic in person for the fitting. Being tied to a real telehealth provider is also what keeps our information grounded in what doctors actually prescribe here at home.

How our content is written and reviewed

Every page starts from published medical evidence and South African clinical practice, not from marketing copy. We write in plain English first and add the detail second, because a page you cannot follow is no use to anyone.

Medical review

Content that carries clinical claims is reviewed by an HPCSA-registered doctor before it goes live, and again when guidance changes. We keep our medical reviewer generic on purpose. The point is that the information reflects sound, current practice, not that it carries one person's name for marketing weight.

What we will and will not do

  • We will explain how each method works, including that the pill and patch usually take about 7 days to become fully effective, while the injection can protect you within 24 hours if it is given in the first 5 days of your period.
  • We will be clear that hormonal methods do not protect against STIs. Only condoms do that, so we say so where it matters.
  • We will name the real trade-offs and the reasons a doctor assessment matters, since some conditions (certain migraines, high blood pressure, smoking over 35, a history of blood clots) affect which methods are safe.
  • We will not use scare tactics, shame anyone for their choices, or present a personal decision as ours to make. The right method for you is a conversation between you and a doctor.

If you want to see how getting a prescription works from start to finish, read get contraception online, or dig into a specific method on our pages for the pill, the patch and the injection.

Medical disclaimer

Contraception SA provides general information for education only. It is not a substitute for a consultation, diagnosis or treatment from a qualified healthcare professional, and nothing on this site should be taken as personal medical advice. Any decision to start, change or stop a contraceptive method should be made with a registered doctor who knows your history. If you have side effects that worry you, think you might be pregnant, or have symptoms such as severe leg pain, chest pain or shortness of breath while on a hormonal method, please seek medical help.
